Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
